With the countless mountain ranges and thousands of miles of trail, it is not surprising that guidebooks have sprung up to explain the various hiking trails located in the Montana. While these hiking books may not be useful to the angler who will be staying in the valleys and fishing the major rivers, all of these trail guidebooks are immensely helpful for the angler venturing up into the mountains to fish. Unlike most other western states, where you can frequently drive right up to the shore, getting to most mountain lakes to fish in Montana requires hiking in. As a result, these hiking books and guidebooks provide an excellent reference source to aid the angler in deciding what mountain lakes to fish and what type of hike to expect (long/short in miles, easy/moderate/difficult in vertical gain).

Hiking Montana's Bob Marshall Wilderness Hiking Montana's Bob Marshall Wilderness
     by Erik Molvar

Big Sky Fishing Comments
Anyone planning on venturing out into the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area in Montana should absolutely have this book. The huge size of the Bob Marshall Wilderness (over 1.5 million acres), along with its massive trail network (over 2000 miles of trails), makes this guidebook indispensible. Many of the trails in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area are seldom maintained - so a trail on a map may not be much of a trail in person. The book also does a wonderful job of showing elevation gains/losses on all major trails. In short, if you plan on hiking in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex in Montana, you absolutely should have this book.
