does a nice job illustrating why Great Divide Ski Area has a web
of snowfences at the summit. As you can see, the area to the left
of the snowfence (which is to the west) is completely bare of snow
- due to the wind constantly blowing the snow off the summit. The
snow fence, though, slows down the wind enough so that the snow
falls back down onto the trail. During low snow years (when this
picture was taken), these snow fences are the difference between
having many ski runs open up at the top or having just a handful.
This picture looks towards the North and was taken just a bit below
the summit. |
