Calm days like this on Lake
McDonald happen, surprisingly, quite often. The west side of Glacier
National Park doesn't have nearly the wind that the east side of
the park. As such, during the morning and again during the evening
hours,
you can often find the lake "smooth as glass", just like
this. It doesn't happen everyday, but it happens enough so that it
isn't a "rare event" like a calm day is over on the east
side of the park. The mountains in this photo are part of the Apgar
Mountains. A lookout is located on the far left of the range, called
Apgar Lookout.
This lookout provides a great view of Lake McDonald and the rest of
the park, and is reached by hiking up the Apgar
Lookout Trail. This photo was taken before the Robert Fire of 2003,
which completely "nuked" the mountain.
