Book Review
A fascinating book about all the people who have died in Yellowstone
(excluding auto accidents and illness). It seems strange that a book
about death would be fun to read, but I definitely enjoyed this one.
It also gives some good examples of what NOT to do when in Yellowstone.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has been to Yellowstone
or is interested in the park.

Book
Description
For as long as they've existed, parks like Yellowstone have been the
scene of some of the most intensive commercial activity in the American
West. Selling Yellowstone recounts the story of such activities in our
oldest park from the 1870s through the 1960s. It is the first book to
examine critically the place of business in the development of America's
national parks, demonstrating the prominent role played by profit-driven
entrepreneurs in shaping the physical landscape of what is generally
perceived as unaltered wilderness.

Description
Beginning with a hundred-mile hike to reach Hawks
Rest, Ferguson recounts his adventures observing
grizzly bears, tracking wolf packs, and encountering
other wildlife in what is now the largest intact
ecosystem in the temperate world. Along the way
he meets an intriguing array of backcountry hikers,
park rangers, elk hunters, outfitters, and wildlife
biologists all grappling with the challenges
of preserving this magnificent slice of wilderness.
Personal, poignant, and often gripping, Hawks
Rest celebrates “this profusion of things
fierce and vast and thrilling” as it chronicles
the stresses that threaten America’s most
beloved wilderness lands.

Book
Description
This history explores the conflicted creation of Yellowstone National Park
in late nineteenth-century America. The author examines the American myths
and late-Victorian values behind the movement both to preserve the Yellowstone
wilderness and to extract its natural resources. He introduces the tastemakers,
stewards, financiers, and boosters who jockeyed to protect the wilderness,
commodify the scenery, and exploit valuable natural resources. The major
cultural and economic force in the Yellowstone story was the Northern Pacific
Railroad.

Review
Wingate's book, Through the Yellowstone Park on Horseback, provides a
faithful and fascinating account of early tourist travel. The University
of Idaho Press provides a service by republishing the book and reminding
us of Yellowstone's marvelous history.
