| Quake Lake, seen here cutting through the Slide Area. The barren area on the mountain is the portion that came tumbling down into the Madison River during the earthquake. The channel was created by the Army Corps of Engineers to prevent the Madison River from overflowing the natural dam and creating a catastrophic flood downstream. This stretch of the Madison River is not really fishable, as it lies deep down in the channel and has extensive Class III and Class IV whitewater.
