As for what to get, you have two choices. You can get a self-inflating pad or a foam pad. In general, both work equally well. Some people find the foam pads less comfortable, but I've never noticed that. About the only problem with a foam pad is that they are a bit bulkier. On the other hand, you don't have to worry about the pad developing a hole either.
Shown below are some high quality, lightweight pads - all of which work well for backpacking but aren't the greatest for lots of car camping. All pads are available through Backcountry.Com.
