Montana is
full of abandoned farm houses in the central and eastern part of
the state. The Hi-Line area, in particular, has quite a few of
these old homestead. Now, it does need to remembered, while these
old farm homes and farm buildings have been abandoned - the land
itself is still in production. As previous farm families moved
out of these now abandoned farm homes, the land has generally been
bought out by other nearby farmers and ranchers. The result is
that existing farms and ranches get larger and larger, with fewer
and fewer people working the land. This is the main reason why
the Hi-Line region of Montana has experienced a loss of population
- agricultural condolidation. |
