This is another "scenic" shot of the Berkeley Pit Strip Mine which is located in Butte, MT. The Berkeley Pit is no longer an active strip, although mining still occurs in other nearby mines. At one time, most of the mining in Butte was down underground (hence all the abandoned Mine Rigs you see around town). But, due to cheaper costs to strip mine, underground mining fell out of favor beginning in the mid 1950's (although some underground mining was still done for many years afterwards).
