Open, Grassy Meadows and Forested Mountains
In the western Bears Paw Mountains, the mountains (really more "large hills") are higher than what is found further east. This increased elevation, combined with being further west, allows more precipitation to fall. This increased precipitation allows trees to grow on these large hills. The Bears Paw Mountains of Montana do, in many ways, resemble the Black Hills of South Dakota.
