Drumlins and Mountains in the Tobacco Valley
This photograph was taken just to the north of Eureka, on US Highway 93. It shows the mountains of the Whitefish Range. The rolling hills located before the mountains (and throughout the northern part of the Tobacco Valley, actually) are called Drumlins.
Drumlins are composed of glacial till that form near the lower ends of glaciers where the ice is thin. Drumlins are oriented parallel to the movement of the glacier, with the higher end facing into the glacial movement and lower end of the drumlin trailing off in the downflow direction of the glacier.
