Near West Butte in the Sweet Grass Hills of Central Montana
The forested southern flank of West Butte in the Sweet Grass Hills of Montana rises steeply off the prairie floor. In this part of Montana, trees are very scarce and can only be found where they've either been planted (usually around homes) or, as seen here, clinging to the southern slopes of hills large enough to receive more moisutre than what is found down in the prairie below.
